Well here it is your 2018 US Men’s National Team for Russia 2018 (this is so depressing…)
*Note: players selected must be healthy and edible to play – for example Danny Williams has a broken leg and Jozy Altidore just had foot surgery. Also this is who I would pick, not who I think Bruce Arena or anyone else would select.
Zack Steffen, Bill Hamid, Alex Bono
This is pretty simple. These are the three best American keepers in the world right now. And thats really the key. Past performance is not a reason to bring Tim Howard to a World Cup. Brad Guzan is a consideration but I feel these three are better.
Deandre Yedlin, John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Matt Miazga, Fabian Johnson, Jorge Villafana, Shaq Moore, Antonee Robinson
Strong group really. Good mix of established players and youth. I think it would be unlikely (barring injury) that Moore or Robinson see the field however it would certainly be a great experience for them.
Michael Bradley, Westin Mckennie, Tyler Adams, Paul Arriola, Christian Pulisic, Darlington Nagbe, Kenny Saief, Tim Weah
Lots of youth and inexperience which could be trouble, especially when playing a pressing experienced side. Could be lots of turnovers. On the other hand, in the biggest stage maybe guys like Arriola, Weah, Adams, and Mckennie shine?
Clint Dempsey, Bobby Wood, Dom Dwyer, Josh Sargent
By far the thinnest group. This team will need the midfield to be heavily involved in the attack. Supersub Clint Dempsey will have to channel some magic for this group to get through.
Steffen and the backline where obvious for me. Using the 4-1-4-1 that seems to be our most common formation lately picking the midfield and thinking about how this team would score was challenging. Wood has been so off that I felt Dwyer would be the only option to start a World Cup game as the #9 right now. I think Dempsey plays a lot, maybe even subs in the second we go down a goal in any game.
Bradley anchors at the #6, but then we shoot the locks off with Adams, Mckennie, and Arriola. Dangerous, fast, and very risky. But hey go big or go home right? Nagbe got a lot of consideration as a facilitator and maybe would play instead of Mckennie. I doubt Weah or Saief play much unless games are already decided.
What do you think?
